On the evening of June 6, 1868, a group of physicians gathered at the office of Dr. Albert H. Smith located at 113 S. Broad Street. They met in response to a letter from Drs. George Pepper and Smith who identified them as leaders in the care of women in the Philadelphia area and invited them to meet and consider the formation of a society to advance the study of obstetrics and the diseases of women and children.
