Humanitarian Relief Opportunities

Contact: Peter Schnatz, DO

schnatzp@readinghospital.org. Tel: 610-988-8827

Below is some information about the trips that can be sent to the organizational list-Some are lead by me & some by other team leaders -

The trips are through FaithCare – - the web site is: www.FaithCare.net

The mission of the organization is to bring health, hope, & healing, to & through the health care community, providing transforming love locally and internationally.

The next trip is in June – so time is short for this trip. If there was someone who wanted to join this team – I would need to talk to them immediately to see what we could do. There is one other ObGyn physician on this team. So here are the upcoming dates:

February 11th – 19th 2011 :          Haiti                                 Peter F. Schnatz, DO

David G. Hall, MD

March 25th – April 10th 2011 :       Nigeria , West Africa        Peter F. Schnatz, DO

Cynthia Price, MD

June  Date TBD              2011:      Dominican Republic        Cynthia Price , MD

Sherry-Anne Brown

July 22th – August 7th 2011:         Nigeria, West Africa        John Nwangwu, MD

As you can see, there are typically about 4 or 5 trips per year. More info can be found on www.faithcare.net

For a higher surgical volume – Nigeria  or Haiti would probably be the best trips.

The criteria to go are: A willing heart, the necessary funds (Nigeria is about $3,000 – that includes everything – air, food, travel, lodging, etc), the time to be away, and then the following:

We have informational packets for the trips which can be found on the website.

Go to www.faithcare.net, select Global impact missions, then “information Haiti ”, “information Nigeria ”, or “information Siberia ”.

The applicant should:Read the info packet entirely – if still interested:

- Talk to the team leader – the FaithCare office will get you in touch with that person.

- fill out the application.

- sign the agreement & waiver form (these need to be signed & can be obtained from the office: 860-674-0698)

We have an orientation which usually takes place a few weeks before the trip. It is usually done on a week-end. It is a very valuable experience on numerous levels – not only do we go over all the trip expectations, rules & regulations, etc/etc – but we also do team building. It gives people a chance to learn about the other team members, get questions answered, etc. If people are coming from a long distance – it is still helpful to come. We have had some occasions where we can do orientation long distance (by phone, etc) – although that is not ideal.

While there – it depends on ones background & experience (IE – If a doctor or not & if a doctor – what kind & how much experience. Non doctors plug in with the pharmacy, with the spiritual counseling team, with general helper functions, etc/ etc – believe me, there is no shortage of need).

Possibly surgery – as long as we have a surgical team on the trip – and certainly consultations / prescriptions / etc.
See the info packet for cost issues / etc – Haiti is around: $1,800 (for everything – air, food, lodging, etc).

Nigeria is $3,000 (for everything – air, food, lodging, etc).

“What is new for this coming year?”

Monday, September 6th, 2010
  1. We have discovered the original minutes from the initial Society meetings beginning in 1869 and continuing to 1871. In addition, we have found minutes from  October 1896 to October 1897 and October 1900 to October 1901.  The meetings consisted of case presentations and commentary.  We plan to present cases from these books and ask for membership comments,  thoughts, and comparisons to how obstetrics and gynecology is practiced today.
  2. The Council has developed a plan to expand the Newsletter to become, in part, a Journal to which members and residents can submit synopses of their current research projects, clinical projects, case reports,  etc. This will create a vehicle for members and residents to publish their work and inform other physicians about their research and projects. They will still be able to publish finished articles in a peer reviewed journal. They will be able to receive feedback on their work through letters to the editor.
  3. Our Resident representatives are compiling a list of chief residents from all of  the area programs and creating a list serve so that they can contact the chiefs. In this way they can help to keep them informed of Society activities and encourage as many residents to attend the meetings as possible. If you have not submitted your chief resident contact info., please do so ASAP.
  4. We are continuing the tradition of resident case presentations to open each dinner program lecture.  The case presentation will introduce the topic of the night. Dr. Hewlett and Dr. Kolter are in the process of lining up the programs and residents who will present this year.
  5. We will be videotaping the lectures this year and posting the videos on the members’ only section of the website. This affords members the opportunity to review a lecture they wanted more information from. Please  let me know what you think about this.

Welcome to the new Obphila.org website

Monday, October 12th, 2009

We are delighted to bring you a fresh look of our new website. It addresses the opportunities in the dynamic flow of information today. You can view all the planned lectures, pay for the yearly dues as well as for the meetings, download the Newsletter and give the opportunity to add new members quickly. Shortly we will have forums where members can present questions to all practicing physicians for info or advice and a forum where employment opportunities will be listed. The success of the site depends on all of us. Please send me your ideas, requests, and comments about the future needs and goals of the society. Thank-You.
